Una nuova ricerca pubblicata su Addictive Behavior Reports fa luce sul perfezionismo e su come la genitorialità possa contribuire al rischio di problemi legati all’alcol. Lo studio ha scoperto che la genitorialità autoritaria delle madri – ma non dei padri – era collegata ad aspetti negativi del perfezionismo, che possono influenzare indirettamente il consumo di alcol nei figli.
Julie A. Patock-Peckham, assistente professore di ricerca presso la Arizona State University, direttrice del Social Addictions Impulse Lab e autrice del presente studio, ha dichiarato che “questo modello è ispirato da alcuni individui molto perfezionisti che lavoravano nel mio laboratorio. Mi sono interessata a questo argomento dopo aver osservato alcuni dei miei studenti più tecnicamente esperti sviluppare disturbi dell’uso di alcol o ricadute dalla dipendenza da alcol. Questi studenti erano ossessionati da come gli altri li vedevano al punto da temere qualsiasi feedback riguardo al loro lavoro. In psicologia, gli scienziati devono sentirsi a proprio agio nel far modificare e revisionare il proprio lavoro da altri. Uno studente, in particolare, non è stato in grado di presentarsi davanti agli altri per paura di non farlo alla perfezione”.
Inoltre la Patock-Peckham ha spiegato che “questi studenti sembravano usare l’alcool per affrontare i loro problemi di vita a un ritmo maggiore rispetto agli studenti che erano più a loro agio nel non essere perfetti in ogni momento. Già in passato sono stati condotti studi che utilizzano gli stili genitoriali come influenze indirette del bere, è stata quindi mia intenzione determinare quali stili genitoriali fossero associati al perfezionismo disadattivo“.
Un sondaggio di 419 studenti universitari ha rivelato un percorso complicato tra stili genitoriali, sintomi depressivi e problemi legati all’alcol. I ricercatori hanno scoperto che i partecipanti che avevano avuto una madre autoritaria tendevano a mostrare livelli più elevati di perfezionismo negativo, noto come discrepanza, che a sua volta era associato ad un aumento dei sintomi depressivi.
“Esistono forme adattive di perfezionismo, come avere standard elevati e avere uno spiccato bisogno di ordine, ma esistono anche forme disadattive di perfezionismo, come la discrepanza: la distanza tra il sé ideale e il sé reale“, ha spiegato Patock-Peckham.
La discrepanza del perfezionismo era direttamente collegata sia ai sintomi più depressivi che ai problemi correlati all’alcol. L’aumento dei sintomi depressivi, nel frattempo, era associato a tentativi di automedicazione attraverso il bere alcolici, portando così sia ad un aumento dell’uso di alcol che ai problemi correlati all’alcol.
Sorprendentemente, tuttavia, avere un padre più autoritario sembra portare al risultato opposto. Patock-Peckham ha detto che “i padri autoritari promuovono effettivamente standard elevati nella loro prole, e tale relazione risulta essere un legame protettivo contro la depressione e l’uso di alcol a scopi di automedicazione“.
“Possiamo solo ipotizzare che l’obbedienza richiesta dai padri operi diversamente dall’obbedienza richiesta dalle madri. Può essere percepito come una forma di cura da parte dei padri avere regole per la prole anche quando tali regole sono rigide“, hanno scritto i ricercatori nel loro studio.
La genitorialità autorevole materna, al contrario di quella autoritaria, è invece indirettamente collegata a un minor consumo di alcol. Mentre la genitorialità autoritaria è caratterizzata dall’avere regole inflessibili senza calore, la genitorialità autorevole è caratterizzata da calore con chiare linee guida.
Anche la genitorialità autorevole, sia nelle madri che nei padri, ha contribuito ad aumentare gli standard elevati. “Questo è solo un primo passo esplorativo per esaminare la potenziale spiegazione del perché alcune persone potrebbero scegliere l’alcol per affrontare i loro problemi e le loro delusioni nella vita. C’è davvero bisogno di più lavoro su questo argomento, inclusi alcuni studi longitudinali. Mi piacerebbe anche vedere uno studio sul perfezionismo che esamina tutti i motivi per l’uso di alcolici“, ha detto Patock-Peckham.
“Il perfezionismo è un costrutto grossolanamente sottovalutato quando si tratta di risultati sulla salute e sul benessere“, ha aggiunto la ricercatrice.
“Sebbene standard elevati possano essere correlati a risultati positivi, la necessità di essere letteralmente perfetti agli occhi degli altri può essere dannosa per la salute. Dobbiamo smettere di essere orgogliosi di glorificare la discrepanza del perfezionismo. Nessuno avrebbe mai fatto qualcosa di veramente nuovo, innovativo o eccitante nella scienza se avesse avuto troppa paura di sembrare anche sciocco in alcune occasioni“.
